Cúcuta, capital of the Department of Norte de Santander, is only 16 km from the Venezuelan frontier. For a busy border town, it is a surprisingly pleasant place to visit, with plenty of green spaces and a bustling but non-threatening centre. It was founded in 1733 by Juana Rangel, severely damaged by the earthquake in 1875, and then elegantly rebuilt, with the streets shaded by trees.
